Hey everyone, I’m Timon, one of the two founders of Songbirds. I am a singer-songwriter at home in the folk-pop genre. Discovering music of all kinds is one of my greatest pleasures, which is part of the reason why we started this project.
What I find particularily intriguing about song is that it is such a compressed medium. The challenge lies in packing a story and multiple layers of meaning into what usually amounts to just a few minutes. I’m fascinated by the various ways people create art within those limitations - bending the rules, going beyond them and creating magic.
While Jeeyoung comes from a classical background, my roots are in pop and jazz. Although we live in what might be considered opposite worlds, we discovered that we share many core values. That’s what Songbirds is about for me: showing that there isn’t necessarily a right or a wrong approach to music, and that diversity is essential for art to flourish.
I’m looking forward to this journey with Songbirds and hope we can inspire and connect with like-minded people who celebrate the love of song.
Hi everyone, I'm Jeeyoung. I am also a founder of Songbirds. I am a classical singer, or opera singer, who specializes in Song. This means that I sing music that has been set to already existing poetry. I've always been fascinated on how a piece of poetry has inspired great musicians to set music a certain way, and for this reason, I believe text is one of the most important factors in a song, no matter the genre.
For this reason, I wish to build a platform for artists, like myself, who crave to talk about the importance of text and the magic it creates in music. I also wish that through the conversations that get carried out in our interviews, more people will broaden their views and see the value of this beautiful form of art. A platform and a safe space for Song to live. Where it can start to flourish in the hearts of those who aren’t familiar with its beauty. A platform for incredibly interesting artists to gain their deserved recognition.
So join us in our little journey into the breath-taking world of Song, and into the beautiful minds of the artists that make it come to life!
We are a magazine / blog conducting interviews with artists who work with song.
In a cozy atmosphere, they tell us about where they come from, their thoughts on art, current projects, and whatever else might come up. We want to portray their artistry while also revealing the human behind the work. And of course, we’re here to have a great time.
Just as there are thousands of bird species, there are many kinds of artists. Our goal is to show what kind of songbird they are.
One of our core beliefs is that every artist brings a unique point of view to the table. While there may be certain societal archetypes, an artist working unrestrainedly and authentically will paint with an inimitable array of colors. What makes them „different“ from others is exactly what we want to celebrate.
It is crucial that we are inclusive of everyone, regardless of backround, and that we give artists who might not be heard in other settings a platform - however small - to share their stories and beliefs. The German music scene, in particular, can at times be restrictive and discriminatory.
We are open to artists of ALL genres - classical, pop, jazz, hip-hop - you name it. Our only condition is that they work with song. We also make sure to highlight instrumentalists, as singers often tend to be foregrounded.
Art is kept alive through the exchange of different perspectives. Especially during times like these when we are under various kinds of pressure, and when being confronted with wars and fascism is no longer just a paragraph in a history book - we need art not only to cope but also to initiate change. We must tend to it and recognize the power we hold as a community.
We define a song as the most beautiful marriage between music and text. Essentially, a song is a melody set to a poem.
Both poetry and music are art forms that provide such depth and breadth that, when combined, they create virtually infinite possibilites of beauty for us to appreciate. Beyond that, a musician’s interpretation of all these elements adds yet another layer of richness.
The way we consume and digest music, or any other form of art, today often does not encourage us to use our full capacity for concentration. As a result, we may miss the message within the music altogether. Sometimes we don’t even fully grasp the context of the text. It would be a waste of art, if we decided that we are too busy to pay attention to song texts.
As you might have noticed, we put a lot of love and passion into Songbirds. This project means a great deal to us, and we are committed to creating a safe space where artists can share their love for song with us.
We are incredibly thankful for every post that is shared and every like we receive, and we hope to reach more and more people over time.
At the moment, all interviews are published in the language in which they were conducted, while our Instagram page and website are in English in order to be as accessible as possible.
On a different note, it is important for us to mention that we do not make use of generative AI. Everything you see and read is the result of our own efforts.
We are always open for questions, suggestions, ideas, and feedback. Please don’t hesitate reach out to us.
